EMMT Beacon

A penetrator-deployed navigation and communications beacon for lunar surface and asteroid operations.

  • Precision navigation

One-way ranging and timing references for spacecraft, rovers, and crews operating beyond GPS coverage.

  • Resilient S-band comms

Telemetry and command over a hardened 2.2 GHz S-band link with ≥14.6 dB margin across mission scenarios.

  • Standards-native

CCSDS Proximity-1 and LunaNet (LNIS v5) compatible for interoperable cislunar networks.

  • Built for deep space

Radiation-tolerant COTS avionics and a passive thermal design for the −183 to +120 °C lunar environment and high-g penetrator impact.

Roadmap

The beacon platform scales through deployment variants that reuse the same core hardware. These are conceptual and sequenced after the flagship’s first lunar flight — timelines depend on funding and mission outcomes.

Concept

Beacon L2 — Orbital Release

Deployment Variant

Adds a retro-rocket so the beacon can deploy from any low-lunar-orbit spacecraft — no descending lander required.

Independent of a landing carrier

Concept

Beacon L3 — Network Carrier

Constellation

A dedicated carrier seeds multiple beacons in a single mission, standing up wide-area surface PNT infrastructure.

3–10 beacons per mission

Concept

Beacon A1 — Asteroid

Small-Body Variant

Adapts the beacon for micro-gravity asteroid surfaces with a redesigned anchoring approach for small-body operations.

Deferred pending lunar flight heritage

About EMMT

Owner-operated, mission-driven, and built for deep space

Mission

To make cislunar space navigable and connected — delivering the navigation, timing, and communications infrastructure that lets commercial operators work safely beyond Earth orbit.

Vision

A thriving Earth–Moon–Mars economy where every spacecraft, rover, and depot can find its position and stay in contact — built on open, interoperable standards.

Capabilities

Capabilities as a small business

The reach of a prime with the speed and accountability of a small, owner-operated team — across the full navigation and communications stack.

Agile by design

A small, senior team that moves from concept to prototype fast — with direct access to decision-makers on every call.

Aerospace software

Flight and ground software for navigation, telemetry, and command — built to spaceflight reliability standards.

Hardware prototyping

Rapid board-level and integration prototyping to close the loop between firmware, RF, and mechanical design.

RF & S-band comms

Link design, S-band radio integration, and test for resilient communications in the deep-space environment.

CCSDS & LunaNet protocols

Standards-native engineering for interoperable cislunar networks and future LunaNet services.

SBIR experience

Direct SBIR/STTR experience from proposal through execution — including serving as Principal Investigator on a U.S. SOCOM Phase I SBIR.

Regulatory navigation

Comfortable steering FCC licensing and spectrum coordination for commercial space communications.

Systems engineering

Requirements, interfaces, and verification managed end-to-end so subsystems integrate the first time.

Owner-operated

Deep technical ownership and accountability — the people who design the system are the ones who answer for it.

Leadership

Daniel Ashley

Founder & Principal Engineer

Daniel Ashley founded EMMT and leads its engineering. His work spans embedded systems, robotics, RF/communications, and hardware–software integration, including years as a Robotics Engineer at Intelligent Automation, Inc. — a prolific SBIR research firm — through its 2021 acquisition by BlueHalo, where he served as Principal Investigator on a U.S. SOCOM Phase I SBIR. A University of South Florida graduate, he has led the EMMT Beacon program from initial concept through CONOPS definition and SDR-based hardware proof-of-concept.
